During his childhood Pablo Neruda encountered a hand of a small boy in the narrow opening of his backyard fencing.
The little boy on the other side (of his own age and a total stranger) left a sheep doll as a gift.
This moved Neruda and had a lasting influence on his understanding of brotherhood.
Without thinking he ran back home to fetch his own pinecone that he had treasured so.
But on returning he found the boy had left without expecting anything in return.
